I Love Dogs posted this beautiful story on Facebook this week. A heartbreaking photograph of a German Shepherdsitting in a hole at a gravesite in Serbia went viral last week, and I Love Dogs shared the story behind the photograph, a photo that tugged at the heartstrings of people around the globe.
Though at first glance, it appears as if this tired, broken dog has dug a hole to be close to her dead owner, buried in a Serbian grave, the reality was much sweeter. The photograph piqued the curiosity of an animal rescuer in that area. Further inspection by rescuer Vesna Mihajloski of the hole revealed that, instead of mourning her dead human, this wonderful momma was really shielding her four newborn puppies from predators, both human and animal, caring for them as they struggled to emerge into a scary, new world. It was certainly not an ideal circumstance for this little family, so she made a quick decision on the spot.
Ms. Mihajloski took the family home and began caring for them. They have blossomed with Vesna’s care and attention, and the help of her co-heroes, animal rescuers like herself. Momma is feeling and looking much better, the puppies are bundles of good health and will soon be ready for new homes. Though Vesna’s Facebook page is not entirely in English, you can easily translate it by clicking the translate button!
Momma took great care of her puppies, but was happy for help from local humans. What people thought was a sad, mournful dog, was actually one that was brimming with life, and she and her family have a bright future ahead.
