How many of us have seen just one photo of an animal online and knew in your heart that this was the one for you? You can count this ShelterMe writer among that group.
However, intake photos are almost never the best representation of the true personality of an animal. So, imagine if dogs could chill outside the shelter walls while having their glamour shots taken, surrounded by men and women loving on them? Check out the photos here, and you’ll agree that these photographers have, well, gone to the dogs, but in the best way possible!
Please meet the men of “Heartthrobs and Hound Dogs” and the women from “The Babes and Bullies“. All have voluntarily stripped down and glammed up for these gorgeous calendar photo shoots, to benefit animals in their communities.
The Babes and Bullies, based in New Mexico, have been advocating for the humane treatment of bully breeds and pit bulls since 2008. Through donations, such as the purchase of their fun and sassy retro ‘pin-up girl’ calendars, which is their most popular item, as well as other fundraising events, they provide medical and spay/neuter assistance to low income bully breed owners. They also assist shelters and rescue groups who support bully breeds.
They volunteer their time to help correct the prejudicial myths about pit bulls through community outreach and education. They are not a rescue, though some of their members are foster families for bully breeds. This year, the Babes and Bullies have already donated $10,000 to different rescue groups in NM, and are committed to the concept that ‘bit by bit we can all work together to erase the bully breed stigma.’
You can check out this Facebook page or their website for more photos or to make a donation or receive information about their organization. You can purchase a calendar by using the Email Us link here, and send the Babes and Bullies an email.
And what about those Heartthrobs and Hound Dogs? Do any of them make your heart skip a beat? It certainly might when you learn that all of them are real-life heroes: firefighters, police officers and military veterans. Not one of them is a model or an actor. They were brought together by Ricki Beason Rescue Photography. This calendar features twelve months of handsome hunks and adoptable dogs from Texas rescues and shelters.
Ms. Beason devotes much of her time creating beautiful portraits of adoptable dogs to help blast false notions about animals in shelters. Because they are in a shelter, animals can be stereotyped as being ‘broken’, that there is something wrong with them, while most often that is simply the furthest thing from the truth.
Shelter and rescue dogs need people to see that they are worthy of a new home. That they should not be overlooked and are beautiful, and each deserves their time in the limelight. She created this calendar so that people could see the faces of the dogs in need along with the faces of the brave men who serve neighborhoods and cities in Texas, and give them some recognition as well.
The list of the Texas rescues benefiting from the sale of this calendar are listed here, and include rescues in Houston, Dallas and Austin, the Forgotten Dogs of the 5th Ward Project, along with other groups. Click here to be taken to the page to order your calendar; every purchase will help a Texas animal rescue partner.
We wholeheartedly agree with Ms. Beason, who states,
It is essential to capture a dog’s personality because that one picture can change a dog’s life forever.
